Been looking at Earth Shelter for a few years now and with retirement soon, want to escape the congestion of ever expanding suburbia in the search for as Independent Lifestyle as I can find/create and afford. With annual average temperature at my current location of 69 degrees, earth should be near perfect living condition. A few years back in middle of upper 90s degree summer, I measured temperature 2′ below ground at 82 degrees, 3′ at 81 and 4′ at 79 which is still tolerable. Use an umbrella to insulate the surrounding soil and increase inner temperatures even more. An umbrella house or PAHS home works on the principle that Earth is an ideal thermal mass for storing heat over long time periods. Summer’s heat is absorbed out of the home into the surrounding dry earth, keeping it cool and comfortable.
When an entire earth-sheltered house is built below grade or completely underground, it's called an underground structure. An atrium or courtyard design can accommodate an underground house and still provide an open feeling. Such a house is built completely below ground on a flat site, and the major living spaces surround a central outdoor courtyard.

An architect or designer must ensure that the home is up to code. The building process begins with a civil engineer, who evaluates soil conditions and water runoff. Dave South, the publisher of the Dome News for the Monolithic Dome Institute, recommends that a structural engineer design a building strong enough to support the load placed over the home. When you build into the ground, the earth functions as a thermal mass, helping to maintain a comfortable interior temperature year-round. However, you must carefully plan the structure itself to carry the load of the earth.

Subterranean home kits normally come with materials, directions and plans. I once wrote that from Hobbiton to Tatooine, earth sheltered houses make sense all over the universe; now you can just order one up. Although insulation in an underground building does not need to be as thick as that in a conventional house, it is necessary to make an earthen house comfortable. If insulating outside the wall, a protective layer of board should be added to keep the insulation from contacting the earth. The site's topography and microclimate determine how easily the building can be surrounded with earth.

Kaplan Thompson Architectsdid an amazing job with the structure of this building. They used their experience with building “net-zero” homes to create this eco-friendly home. This earth-sheltered house, which’s almost more of an underground house, is located in the wilds of the Outer Hebrides. Everything about the building is recycled—including the paving stone, which was the floor of old jail cells. The window faces south, so that it warms the two-foot-thick concrete floor. Even on a cold day, the floor stays warm from being heated by the sun.
These home designs are not only environmentally friendly, but truly spectacular. Aesthetically, an earth-sheltered home blends in with the natural environment, leaving more yard space and more space for wildlife. With our air handling system such things as sweating walls, mildew growth, and stale air are eliminated, and any traces of radon are expelled with the air changes. Bentonite is a natural clay formed into panels that are nailed to walls or applied as a liquid spray.

The type of soil at your site is another critical consideration. Granular soils such as sand and gravel are best for earth sheltering. These soils compact well for bearing the weight of the construction materials and are very permeable, allowing water to drain quickly. The poorest soils are cohesive, like clay, which may expand when wet and has poor permeability. Studies show that earth-sheltered houses are more cost-effective in climates that have significant temperature extremes and low humidity, such as the Rocky Mountains and northern Great Plains. Earth temperatures vary much less than air temperatures in these areas, which means the earth can absorb extra heat from the house in hot weather or insulate the house to maintain warmth in cold weather.

That’s “green” – building in support of the natural environment. Humidity levels may increase in earth-sheltered houses during the summer, which can cause condensation on the interior walls. Installing insulation on the outside of the walls will prevent the walls from cooling down to earth temperature, but can also reduce the summer cooling effect of the walls.
